This year, we celebrate not only the 110th summer of its storied history but also the 10th anniversary of our fruitful joint journey. We at Travelworks are filled with immense gratitude and pride to be part of the Poseidonion family, a true gem of Greek hospitality. It has been an honor to work with such an inspiring brand, a true pillar of hospitality, and to contribute to its enduring legacy on the beautiful island of Spetses. As the Poseidonion celebrates its 110th anniversary, we look back on a century of elegance, luxury, and authentic Greek philoxenia.

The vision of a pioneer

The Poseidonion Grand Hotel has been a landmark on the island’s skyline for nearly a century, with its exceptional architecture echoing the style of hotels on the Côte d’Azur. The hotel was built by Sotirios Anargyros, a descendant of a great 18th-century Spetsiot shipping family. After emigrating to the USA in 1868 and becoming a wealthy tobacco tycoon, Anargyros returned to Spetses in 1899. Recognizing the need for a luxurious retreat, he constructed the Poseidonion, modeled after the Carlton in Cannes and the Negresco in Nice.

Since its debut, the Poseidonion Grand Hotel has drawn an eclectic crowd, attracting affluent Athenians, renowned foreigners, prime ministers, and royalty, offering comfort, spa services, and elegant entertainment.

Notable figures such as Eleftherios Venizelos, Greece’s Prime Minister from 1910 to 1920 and again from 1928 to 1932, have graced its halls.

The revival of a myth

Poseidonion entered a demanding five-year rejuvenation period in 2004, transforming everything from its interior structure to its original rooftop. The challenge was to remain true to Sotirios Anargyros’s vision and reflect all the attributes of the old Poseidonion across every square meter of its new facade. Craftsmen from all over Greece were utilized to restore the hotel to its previous glory, preserving key elements of the original construction while highlighting the island’s architectural character and natural grace.

The hotel’s iconic central staircase, made of marble, and the original hand-painted tiles dating back to 1914, were successfully maintained during the renovation process. The roof of the La Cupola suite, based on the structure of a traditional caique, and the recreated wrought-iron railings of the verandah exemplify the attention to detail that defines the Poseidonion’s timeless elegance.

Antonis Vordonis, Managing Director of Poseidonion Grand Hotel, shares: “As we commemorate this milestone anniversary, we are deeply moved and honored to have pioneered the next chapter of the Poseidonion’s legacy, adding our unique touch to its rich tapestry. It is a profound privilege to be entrusted with continuing the tradition of the Poseidonion Grand Hotel, a bastion of refined luxury and enduring tranquility. As a vital component of our voyage and a never-ending source of inspiration, our relationship to Spetses, a treasured sanctuary of aristocratic splendor and sophisticated attractiveness, elicits strong feelings in us.”

A timeless setting

With its charming rooms and inviting suites, many featuring private gardens or balconies, the Poseidonion provides guests with enchanting views of the picturesque Dapia port and the endless sea. The hotel stands as an artifact of yesteryear, embodying a timeless elegance that has made it a favorite destination for those seeking a contemporary yet classic hospitality experience. The accommodations, whether overlooking the sea or nestled amidst lush gardens, emit a tranquil atmosphere that reflects the island’s radiant light, enveloping guests in a timeless blend of heritage and natural beauty.

Hospitality and culture

As the Poseidonion Grand Hotel gears up for the upcoming season, it remains not only a symbol of Greek hospitality but also a driving force behind numerous initiatives on the island of Spetses. With a legacy spanning over a century, the Poseidonion continues to play a vital role in the cultural development of the region. An array of events and activities, including the Classic Car Rally, Armata festivities, A Weekend in Tweed, and much more, are always in the program. From cultural and sports initiatives to entertainment and promotion, the Poseidonion remains at the forefront, enriching the experience of its visitors while contributing to the growth and vitality of Spetses and Greece as a whole.
